Introduction to Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicine is a safe, effective and affordable alternative medicine, which has been used for over 200 years. The World Health Organization lists homeopathy as the second most widely used health care system in the world the first is herbal medicine.
Homeopathy is manufactured according to the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS). Manufacturers must comply with the good manufacturing practice (cGMP) policies established by the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). The US Congress passed a law in 1938 declaring that homeopathic medicines are to be regulated by the US FDA in the same manner as nonprescription, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
Homeopathy works on the premise that like cures like. For instance Allium cepa (onion) in its pure form causes watery, irritated eyes. When administered in homeopathic formulation as outlined by the HPUS Allium cepa can relieve the symptoms of hay fever such as watery, irritated eyes.
The homeopathic formulation consists of processing the plant, animal, mineral or chemical into an extremely dilute substance and vigorously shaking (succussing) the substance to achieve potentization. The diluted and potentized substance stimulates the body’s natural defenses.
Homeopathy is safe, free of side effects, adverse drug interactions and over-dose. The safety of homeopathy is a result of the dilution and potentization process. Therefore, even infants, elderly and pets can benefit from homeopathic treatment without concern.
