Worry A Lot? Homeopathy Can Help

Posted by

It is an undeniable fact that these are worrisome times.

Typical symptoms of a worried, anxious mind are tension, sleep difficulties, loss of appetite, nervousness, difficulty concentrating and great restlessness. When anxiety levels are high, one tends to feel very uncomfortable.

If you find yourself frequently anxious and worried, know that homeopathy can help you feel more comfortable.

Remember - the key to choosing the correct/helpful remedy is always the same. One must match the “characteristic symptoms” (i.e., unusual or peculiar) of the person you are caring for (not the common ones like a headache, sore throat, cough, fever, etc.) to a remedy capable of producing similar characteristic symptoms to have success. If you choose a remedy with characteristics most similar to the characteristic symptoms of your family member, you should have a happy outcome every time. If you don't - you or they will either feel no effect or one that is mildly positive at best, but there is never a bad effect from choosing the “wrong” remedy.

Here are just a few remedies for you to consider if you find yourself with an anxious, worried mind:

Aconite: A person needing this homeopathic remedy has often suffered a great fear or shock – followed by anger. Many people who were present at the World Trade Center in NYC on 9/11 benefited greatly from this remedy afterward. Those needing this remedy can show an anxious impatience, a not-to-be-consoled anxiety, and a tendency to restlessness – almost as if they want to crawl out of their skin. They can be uncomfortable in crowds and may even be afraid to go out and about. They are sensitive to loud noises and find them intolerable. The tongue, mouth, and lips may tingle and/or feel a bit numb during moments of intense anxiety – and they may experience a very dry mouth and an unquenchable thirst. What Arnica is to physical shock, Aconite is to mental/emotional shock.

Argentum nitricum: This homeopathic remedy can be considered when the person complains of great apprehension and anxiety about an upcoming event. They may be quite impulsive – making what appear to be odd choices when confronted with a need to make a decision. They also tend to be quite irritable when anxious and always in a hurry. A person needing this remedy tends to be a clock-watcher – often ready for an event long before necessary – and tends to walk briskly when out and about. There may be diarrhea with the anxiety. An Argentum nitricum patient will be uncomfortable when in a warm, stuffy room and feel much better in cool open air. They will also tend to have an insatiable sweet tooth.

Arsenicum album: A person needing this remedy will tend to be anxious, uneasy and restless. The restlessness and anxiety are frequently at their worst after midnight. Fear, trembling, cold sweat and a sense of prostration or exhaustion are common. Their favorite topic to worry about is their health or the health of their loved ones. They may be so restless with anxiety that they cannot sit in one place long, but need to move around constantly. Arsenicum patients tend to be chilly, feeling better from warmth – thirsty, preferring frequent sips of warm drinks, and very neat perfectionists.

Gelsemium: One should think of this homeopathic remedy for those who seem anxious but also a bit dull and sluggish physically. Someone needing this remedy frequently becomes ill after bad news, sudden emotions or the anticipation of any unusual ordeal. They tend not to want company, preferring to remain quiet. In World War I, this remedy was frequently given to troops preparing to “go over the top” into battle to settle their systems and restore their courage, and we use it commonly now before a presentation or performance where the person has “stage fright.”

Nux vomica: A person needing this homeopathic remedy will be someone who becomes unusually irritable, morose and sullen with their anxiety and worry. They may be quarrelsome and offended easily. They will tend to be very sensitive to noise, smells, light, music and conversation. Constipation is not uncommon with these folks and they are worse from cold dry air or drafts – and better from warmth. Sleeplessness between 3:00-4:00 AM is somewhat common as well.

Once you have chosen a remedy that appears to match your symptoms (remember – homeopathy is individualized medicine – the remedy you need must match your symptom profile) dose with either a 30C or 200C potency to start - placing one pellet under the tongue or one pellet in water, stirring vigorously and taking teaspoon doses as needed. Always cease dosing when relief begins and only redose if symptoms again worsen. As with any medical condition, consult with your physician if you have any concerns about the severity of your problem as it may first require medical diagnosis and/or intervention and monitoring.
